SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Snow Queen

Inspired by the book of the same name by Joan D. Vinge. As an art class assignment we were asked to choose a book and create our own illustration for it. I tryed to make every element of the drawing have significance to the story, but it's difficult to remember what everything means because I read the book about four years ago;the drawing is about three years old. I do know that the two circles in the upper left are actually supposed to be suns, but they had to look like moons to match the other colors. There is also some influence from the previous covers for this book by Leo and Diane Dillion and Micheal Whelan.

She looks to me like a Frost Giantess or a Goddess of some sort. Very well done!

Oh, this picture reminds me of so many things...but none of them are the book you read! 2 That doesn't matter, this lady still creates a wonderful distant noble feeling. It reminds me the most strongly of an Arabian night story...

I just finished The Snow Queen last week (great book!) and let's see...you have the mers (the white seal-looking creatures) looking on as the Queen controls the Water of Life, which she is pouring from the two containers. You have the city of Carbuncle on the right, which was a sea port, hence the ship. Hmmm..I like this a lot...along with most of your other work.

Oh, wow. This is a cool picture. I just finished the series and loved it, especially the second book. The colours and detail are so spectacular in this picture, though. It looks like it belongs on the top of a russian lacquer box. The mers are so cool looking. WOW.

I think I read that book.... hmm. Anyway, this is so nice and soft. Did you use pastels for this?

:-) Christy Babrick replies: "This was drawn mostly with pastels, and I also used colored pencils for the details"
